Dr Santosh T. Soans
An alumnus of Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore / Manipal, following his post graduation in Pediatrics, he gained valuable experience while serving abroad for few years before returning to settle down in his hometown of Mangalore.
In a career spanning more than three decades, his contribution to pediatrics has extended beyond the clinic and classroom to include leadership roles in professional bodies like Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) and its sister organizations at regional, state, national level and international level.
He was the first Kannadiga to be elected National Chairman of IAP Pediatric Intensive Care Chapter (PICC) in 2013. He subsequently became the second Kannadiga to serve as the National President of Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) during 2018. He is presently a Standing Committee member of International Pediatric Association (IPA) representing Asia Pacific Region.
Dr Santosh T. Soans is a recipient of several prestigious honours and recognitions such as ‘Outstanding Asian Pediatrician Award 2018’ conferred by Asia Pacific Pediatric Association, Singapore and ‘IMA Doctors Day Award 2019’ given by the Indian Medical Association at both national and state level.
Being an experienced academic and practicing pediatrician, he is a much sought after speaker at conferences. He has authored five books, contributed chapters to medical text books and published articles in national and international medical journals.
Profession Activities
Dr Soans began his teaching career serving as faculty at KMC Manipal, followed by a long stint as Associate Professor at Father Muller Medical College, Mangalore. Since 2005, he has been serving at AJ Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangalore as Professor, Head of the Department and Chief of NICU / PICU.
He takes a keen interest in mentoring young doctors and shares his enormous professional experience by serving as Faculty for Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes all over India. He serves as DM Examiner – Pediatric Critical Care, the highest degree in the field.
Awards and Recognitions
Dr Santosh T. Soans has earned numerous laurels for his lifelong contribution to the advancement of Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care. The recognitions he has received include:
- Outstanding Asian Pediatrician Award 2018’ – conferred by Asia Pacific Pediatric Association, Singapore.
- IMA Doctors Day Award 2019’ of Indian Medical Association, New Delhi.
- IMA KSB Doctors Day Award 2019’ of Indian Medical Association, Karnataka State Branch.
- The Dr Santosh Soans Oration – instituted in his name by IAP Karnataka Pediatric Intensive Care Chapter
- He has been formally felicitated on numerous occasions across India in recognition of his work in pediatrics
- He has given more than 30 orations across India, including the prestigious Prof. Arnold H. Einhorn Gold Medal
Personal Profile
Dr. Santosh T. Soans hails from the coastal town of Kundapur, about 90km north of Mangalore. He is married and is the proud father of two children. He is a Rotarian, a Freemason and an active member of the community taking part in social and cultural life. In his youth, he was a keen sportsman and presently enjoys golf and swimming. He is widely traveled and has visited many countries of the world.
